The CIC group is made up of 9 regional banks and 41 international firms, totalling almost 23,500 employees. Its network of 1,627 branches (+ 152 in four years) has 3.2 million customers. Crédit Mutuel is a mutual benefit bank set up over 100 years ago. Since then it has seen continuous growth, gained market share, improved its results (with a net profit of 1.6 billion euros in 2003) and reinforced its financial stability (16.4 billion of equity capital in 2003). This growth stems from its dynamic activity as a retail bank, serving 13.5 million customers in France. Crédit Mutuel employs 31,000 people. The consolidated group, Crédit Mutuel/CIC, is the 4th largest French banking group in terms of volume of deposits and credit, the 2 nd largest retail bank in France and the largest French banking and insurance company. The group covers all the different aspects of finance. It also has the second largest network with 4,750 branches as well as remote banking channels, which are becoming more and more popular. As well as being a high street bank, working alongside all the players that make up the local and regional economy, the CIC group is also a high- technology bank and ranks second in the electronic banking market. On 31 st December 2003, the balance sheet total was 355 billion euros (+2.2%), and the group share net result was 1.3 billion euros, up 33.2%, after a contribution of 271 million to the fund for General Banking Risks.
